Although a record of agriculture course being taught at Smithville High School can be traced back to 1925 with the Mr. O.R. Trip providing instruction, the Smithville FFA chapter did not receive its charter until January 8, 1932. The original charter hanging in the agriculture room lists 44 members, and those members include:

Mr. Joe Farmer started working for the Smithville School District in 1926 as a physical education teacher and worked with Mr. O.R. Trip who was teaching the agricultural education classes at that time. By 1928, Mr. Farmer was the High School Principal and agricultural instructor, and Mr. Farmer helped get the chapter chartered in 1932.
